How Many Syringes Will I Need?
For patients whitening their teeth for the first time, we generally recommend purchasing three syringes of whitening gel to complete your initial whitening course.
This helps achieve the best possible result while ensuring you have enough gel to whiten both the upper and lower teeth. Your dentist will discuss which whitening system and gel strength is most suitable for you.
Whitening Gel Top-Ups
If you’ve previously completed teeth whitening with Active Smile, you may be able to purchase additional whitening gel to maintain your results.
In line with current professional guidance:
- Top-up whitening gels can only be supplied as part of an ongoing course of treatment.
- Your custom whitening trays must be checked by one of our dentists within the last 6months before additional gel can be supplied.
- This ensures your trays still fit correctly and that whitening remains safe and appropriate for your oral health.
If it has been more than six months since your trays were last assessed, we’ll simply arrange a review appointment before providing further whitening gel.
Looking After Your Results
To help keep your smile brighter for longer, we recommend:
- Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
- Cleaning between your teeth daily
- Attending regular hygiene appointments
- Reducing tea, coffee and red wine where possible
- Avoiding smoking and tobacco products
Many patients choose occasional top-up whitening to keep their smile looking its best.

Is Teeth Whitening Safe?
Yes. When carried out under the supervision of a dental professional, teeth whitening is a safe and effective cosmetic treatment.
How long will my results last?
Results vary from person to person, but with good oral hygiene and occasional top-up whitening, many patients enjoy a brighter smile for one to three years.
Will whitening work on crowns or fillings?
No. Teeth whitening only changes the colour of natural tooth enamel. Existing crowns, veneers and white fillings will not whiten.
Will my teeth become sensitive?
Some patients experience temporary sensitivity during whitening, but this usually settles quickly once treatment has finished. We’ll recommend the most appropriate whitening system for your teeth and advise you on how to minimise any sensitivity.
Can anyone have their teeth whitened?
Whitening is suitable for most adults with healthy teeth and gums. We’ll carry out an examination first to make sure it’s the right treatment for you
