What Is a CBCT Scan & Why It Matters for Your Treatment

If your dentist has recommended a CBCT scan, you might be wondering what it is and why it’s needed. While the name may sound technical, the scan itself is quick, painless and provides incredibly detailed information that helps us plan your treatment with greater precision.

At Active Smile, we use advanced digital imaging to give our patients the safest and most effective care possible. A CBCT scan is one of the most valuable tools we have for diagnosing dental problems and planning treatments such as dental implants, wisdom tooth removal and complex root canal procedures.

What is CBCT? CBCT stands for Cone Beam Computed Tomography.

Unlike a standard dental X-ray, which produces a flat image, a CBCT scan creates a highly detailed three-dimensional (3D) image of your teeth, jaw, nerves, sinuses and surrounding bone. This allows your dentist to examine your mouth from every angle, helping to identify issues that may not be visible on traditional X-rays. The scan takes just a few seconds to complete, and you simply stand still while the scanner rotates gently around your head. There are no injections, no discomfort and no recovery time afterwards.

Why Might You Need a CBCT Scan?

Not every patient requires a CBCT scan, but it can be an essential part of planning certain treatments.

Your dentist may recommend one if you’re having:

Dental Implants

Dental implants need to be placed with incredible accuracy.

A CBCT scan allows us to assess:

  • Bone quality
  • Bone volume
  • Exact implant position
  • Nearby nerves
  • Sinus location

This helps ensure implants are placed safely and securely.

Wisdom Tooth Assessment

Sometimes wisdom teeth grow at awkward angles or sit close to important nerves.

A CBCT scan helps us see:

  • Tooth position
  • Root shape
  • Nerve location
  • Bone surrounding the tooth

This allows for safer treatment planning.

Root Canal Treatment

If an infection is difficult to see on a standard X-ray, a CBCT scan can reveal:

  • Hidden canals
  • Root fractures
  • Persistent infections
  • Previous treatment complications

This helps improve the success of root canal treatment.

Diagnosing Dental Problems

CBCT scans can also help investigate:

  • Jaw pain
  • Cysts
  • Bone loss
  • Impacted teeth
  • Facial swelling
  • Dental trauma

Because the images are three-dimensional, they’re often much clearer than conventional X-rays.

Is a CBCT Scan Safe?

Yes. CBCT scanners use a low dose of radiation and are only recommended when the benefits clearly outweigh any risks. Modern digital scanners use significantly less radiation than older medical CT scanners while providing exceptional image quality. At Active Smile, every scan is carefully justified, meaning we only recommend one when it’s genuinely needed for diagnosis or treatment planning. If you’re pregnant or think you may be pregnant, please let your dentist know before any X-rays or scans are taken.

What Happens During the Appointment?

Many patients are surprised by how quick and straightforward the process is.

Step 1 – Preparation

You’ll be asked to remove glasses, earrings and any removable metal objects.

Step 2 – Positioning

A member of our team will position you comfortably inside the scanner. You’ll either stand or sit, depending on the machine.

Step 3 – The Scan

The scanner slowly rotates around your head. It doesn’t touch you. The scan usually takes around 20–40 seconds.

Step 4 – Image Review

Your dentist can immediately review the detailed 3D images and discuss the findings with you.
